Definition
The disavow file is a text file. Each line lists one domain or URL. The domain: prefix covers all subdomains. A URL line covers only that page. The file uses UTF-8 and must not exceed 100,000 lines.
How it works
The file uploads to Google Search Console > Disavow Links. Google removes listed links from ranking calculations. Crawling continues but no authority flows. Disavow alone does not lift a manual penalty; a reconsideration request is required.
Where you see it in Scope Trends
From Backlink Analysis > Toxicity, select Generate Disavow File. The system organizes by domain or URL and outputs a Google-format .txt.
Frequently asked questions
Should I disavow every suspicious link?
No. Only clear spam or artificial patterns. Excessive disavow can also drop healthy links.
Can disavow be reversed?
Yes. Uploading an updated file fully replaces the previous list.
